Hakone’s Treasure Trove of Asian Art

Built on the grounds of a grand Meiji-era hotel for upper class western tourists, the Okada Museum of Art has a wonderful collection of Japanese, Korean and Chinese art. There are roughly 450 important artworks – dating from antiquity up to the modern era – housed in this ultra-modern five-story building.

While the museum is perhaps best known for its ancient Chinese bronzes, and porcelain from the Ming and Tang dynasties, the giant mural which decorates the entrance, depicting Fujin (the Wind God) and Raijin (the Thunder God) is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese art.
