Tour summary
Ninjutsu is a comprehensive survival art, packed with survival techniques, physical manipulation, breathing, mind-body training, meditation and mountain walking wisdom.
This trekking tour is designed to learn these arts while climbing from Keage (Nanzenji Temple) to Daimonji (Nyoigadake) and descending to Ginkakuji Temple. The entire 7.5 km course is relatively gentle and safe, and takes about four hours instead of the usual three hours, so even beginners in mountain hiking can participate.
The tour is guided by a specialist in ninjutsu and mountain hiking.
In detail

Gather at ‘Keage’ station, lecture on the course as a whole and precautions, departure. Through the incline to Himukai-Daijingu Shrine. Pray for a safe journey to Himukai-Daijingu Shrine, known as the ‘O-Ise-san of Kyoto’ and home to the Outer and Inner Shrines, and receive a lecture on the etiquette of visiting the shrine. Passing through the precincts of the shrine and Amano-Iwato, the three-way junction and finally the trekking course.
The Ninja Trekking Course is also part of the 80 km long Kyoto Circumnavigation Trail. Passing through the tree-rooted path, we take a short break at the Shichifuku-Shiandokoro. Here you will learn the breathing and walking techniques of mountain hiking, and also tie a seal (印) to pray for your safety when entering the mountains. Using the breathing and walking techniques you have learnt, continue along the slightly steep mountain path and you will have a panoramic view of Yamashina. The rocky ascent continues. Rest at Dainichiyama (halfway point) and receive a lecture on self-defence using a walking stick.
Approaching the summit, we can see the view open up. Passing through Yotsutsuji, we reach the summit of Mount Daimonji (465m), with a great view of the Yamashina Basin to the south and the Kyoto Basin to the west. The mountain asceticism is also called walking meditation, and by concentrating on walking, we will become mindless and united with nature.
Descend to the famous Migi-Daimonji fireplace of the Gozan-Okuribi (Bonfire on Five Mountains), where we can enjoy a cup of tea. There are many springs and waterfalls where we can enjoy pure water. Descend to the Ginkakuji Temple and disband.
