Kamakura-Bori Carving: Carve Your Own Chopsticks With a Master at Kyukei Goto Gallery – KANAGAWA

Tour summary

Discover the Art of Kamakura-bori: A Hands-On Journey into Traditional Carved Lacquerware

Step into the rich world of Kamakura-bori, a refined form of carved lacquerware that originated in the 13th century in Kamakura. Your experience begins at a serene gallery housed in a 50-year-old traditional folk home, owned by the descendant of one of the oldest Kamakura-bori lineages — Master Kyukei Goto.

Master Goto will personally guide you through the fascinating history, distinct styles, and intricate techniques of Kamakura-bori. You’ll then witness a live carving demonstration before trying your hand at this centuries-old craft.

This is a rare opportunity to view museum-quality works up close and immerse yourself in the tradition by creating your own piece.

As part of the experience, you will carve a pair of personalized chopsticks — a cherished item in every Japanese household. The chopsticks will be custom-fitted to your hand size and, once carved, will be entrusted to a skilled lacquerer. Over 20 meticulous steps of coating and drying will transform your creation into a beautiful, functional work of art.

Suitable for ages 12 and up. No prior experience necessary.

Kyukei Goto

Kyukei Goto is the third of his name, and the 29th generation of a family that traces its origins back to the Kamakura Buddhism statue sculptor, Unkei. Kyukei Goto assumed his name in 1998 to carry on the family tradition, while also continuing creative work outside of the boundaries of Kamakurabori under his birth name of Keidai Goto. He currently teaches Kamakurabori workshops, collaborates with modern artists, and holds special lectures at schools.
