【3 Days】Trails of Hitachi-no-Kuni – IBARAKI

Tour summary

Just 90 minutes from Tokyo, this immersive 3-day tour takes you deep into the rich natural and cultural landscapes of northern Ibaraki Prefecture.

The journey includes three distinct experiences: the sacred path of Oiwa Shrine, rooted in ancient spirituality and artistic heritage; a village immersion in Machiya with deep community connections; and a forest bathing adventure around the famed Fukuroda Waterfalls.

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage with timeless satoyama culture and the warm, grounded lives of local residents.

In detail

Day 1: The Sacred Trail (Oiwa Shrine)

The tour begins at Hitachi Station, where you’ll meet your guide and pick up some locally loved onigiri rice balls—a specialty of the area.

From there, you’ll head to the sacred Oiwa Shrine, surrounded by towering cedar trees and revered for its spiritual energy. Participate in a brief ritual with the shrine maiden and explore the grounds, learning about the shrine’s long history and its significance to the people of Ibaraki.

Afterward, enjoy a moderate hike through the forest trail leading up to the summit, where you’ll take in sweeping views and enjoy a picnic lunch. Upon descending, you’ll visit a local home in the small village at the foot of the shrine, where you can connect more deeply with the area by meeting residents and experiencing a slower, more heartfelt way of life.

Day 2: The Village Journey (Machiya Village)

The second day takes you to Machiya, a quiet rural village undergoing thoughtful revitalization.

Your host, Ikeda-san, is a beloved community figure who has turned her café “Machiya Laboratory” into a hub for locals and visitors alike. She’ll guide you on a walking tour of the village, including a visit to a family-run sake and wine brewery, where you’ll sample their handcrafted drinks and hear stories of daily life.

Next, you’ll walk through rice fields and riverside paths to a local flower garden, where you’ll pick your own blooms to create a personalized ikebana arrangement. Back at the café, you’ll cook together with your host using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to prepare a heartfelt homemade meal.

After lunch, you’re free to explore with a hand-drawn map or join a short hike up Kuroiso Bakke for a panoramic view of the town.

Day 3: The Shinrin-Yoku Path (Fukuroda Falls Area)

Your final day begins with a refreshing hike in the area surrounding Fukuroda Falls, one of Japan’s most celebrated waterfalls. You’ll choose between two options: a light 4.6km nature walk along the historic Tsukii Old Road, or a more challenging ascent of Mount Namase-Fuji, known as the “Gendarme of Ibaraki,” with thrilling ridgeline views.

Midday, stop by Okuno Takisanso, a charming riverside guesthouse converted from an old watermill. Enjoy tea and traditional sweets with the hospitable owners, the Fujita family, and take in the soothing sounds of nature.

The journey concludes with a stroll through the retro shopping streets of Daigo Town, full of nostalgic Showa-era charm. Explore renovated old houses turned into cafés, shops, and izakaya-style pubs, and take the opportunity to pick up some local souvenirs before heading back to Tokyo via Mito Station.
